mMode Icons

AT&T

AT&T’s mMode mobile browser required seventy small menu icons.

Earlier cell phones didn’t generally accommodate semitransparent images; a pixel was either there or it wasn’t. On a low-resolution 13 x 13 grid, a single errant pixel could render an icon unrecognizable.

By customizing of Photoshop’s pencil tool to toggle single pixel visibility on an icon’s layer mask, I could quickly explore and iterate multiple concepts.

The result was clear, fun — and tiny.
